The number of people who report directly to the line manager. It can be narrow or wide. |
Chain of command |
The pathway of authority. Orders flow from senior management level to every employee at every level of the organisation hierarchy. It can be long or short. |
Function |
Tasks or jobs that have to be completed by the employees. |
Delayering |
Removing the number of levels of hierarchy from the organisational structure, especially in terms of a reduction in management. |
Delegation |
Manager passing down authority for work to another employee (normally a subordinate). |
Flat structure |
Organisational structure with few levels of hierarchy between managers and employees. |
Tall structure |
Organisational structure with many different levels of hierarchy with many managers. Each manager is responsible for a small group of people. |
Centralisation |
Business keeps decision-making at the top of hierarchy. Decisions then are passed down to employees placed at the lower level of the hierarchical pyramid. |
Decentralisation |
Senior management gives responsibilities for decision-making to middle and lower level managers within the organisation. |
