What is the order of draw?
Blood culture-bottles
Blue (sodium citrate ) Red (serum) electrolyte-cholesterol Green (heparin) Lavender (EDTA) CBC Gray (Glycolytic Inhibitor) |
What is serum?
Liquid portion of blood after clotting takes places
Plain red top Tiger top |
What is plasma?
Liquid portion of blood before clotting takes place
1. Lavender top - Hemotology - ties up calcium - EDTA 2. Light blue- coagulation studies -prothrombin time and PTT. Sodium Citrate ties up Calcium. 3. Gray Top- sodium fluoride-preservatives glucose 4. Green top- used for Chemistrys. Neutralizes thrombin. 5. Yellow top -used blood cultures-contains SPS. 6. Royal blue-very seldom used-trace materials. |
All tubes that have anticoagulant present will be plasma in:
Supernatant
What components are in coagulation?
Blood vessels, platelets, coagulation factors
What is Hemostasis?
Hetamo=Blood
Stasis=Controlling or stopping Hemostasis is the proceess by which the body stops the leakage of blood from the vascular system after an injury. It is the goal of the body to maintain the blood in a liquid state. Hemostasis includes the process that leads to fibrin clot formation (coagulation) as well as clot destruction (fibrinolysis). If an injury accurs to a blood vessel, the process to repair the injury is set in motion. This process is called the Cogulation Cascadeand occurs in 5 phases. |
What are the 5 phases of Coagulation Cascade?
1. Vasoconstriction or Vascular
2.Platelet orPlatelet Plug Formation 3. Coagulation or fibrin clot formation 4. Clot retraction (lift off) 5. Clot destruction or fibrinolysis |
Stress elevates the White blood cell counts and decreases:
Serum iron levels
Marked increase (15%-20%) in white blood cell counts is noted in:
Crying infants (the WBC count will return to normal in about an hour.
Anxiety alters :
Acid - base balance in the body.
Diurnal Rhythms ( pertaining to daylight or day):
Some blood constitutes vary throughout the day. WBCs, eosinophil counts and iron levels are lower in the morning than in the afternoon. Cortisols are highest in the morning and are usually ordered for 8am and 4 pm for comparison.
Physiological factors that affect blood samples:
Basal state, diet, exercise, stress, diurnal rhythms, as well as age, gender and pregnancy
Hematopoietic:
Any organ that is blood forming
If an evacuted tube is not filled to capacity
The ratio of additive to blood wil be incorrect.
Partially filled blue-topped evacuated tubes used for coagulation testing will not be accepted by most labratories because :
The excess additive will cause erroneous test results.
