What portion of the Earth is covered in water?
2/3
WHy is the ocean important to us?
  • Economic
  • Biological
  • Beaches are great!
  • Natural disasters
  • Environmental
WHat is science?
The method of discovering reliable information to make a hypothesis and theory
WHat are the 6 steps of the scientific method?
  • Curiosity
  • Observations and measurements
  • Hypothesis
  • Experiments
  • Theory
  • Law
Define latutude and longitude
Latitude: measure distance from North to South
Longitude: meaure distance from East to West, also known as the great circles
What are 4 methods used to study the sea floor?
1. Cores
2. Submersibles
3. Echo sounding
4. Satellite
Atoms are composed of what and where?
Protons: nucleus
Neutrons: nucleus
Electrons: outer rings surrounding the nucleus
What is density stratification?
The theory that states that more dense planets are closer to the sun and less dense planets are further away from the sun
The Earth is composed of what 3 layers?
Lithosphere: crust (thin dense oceanic, thick light continental)
Asthenosphere: mantle (upper and lower capable of flow)
Core: inner and outer (solid inner, molten outer)
WHat is the driving force of plate tectonics?
Convection currents
Name 7 evidences of plate tectonicsq
1. continents fitting like a puzzle
2. correlating mountain ranges of sperated continents
3. fossil evidence of same species on diff. continent
4. Paleoclimate evidence
5. seismic evidence
6. Paleomagnetism
7.Hotspot migration
How does the process of radioactive decay work?
It is a process that measures the constant half lives of elements based on their rate of decay. This is used to date rocks. It is also a source of convection in the mantle that drives plate tectonics
What are the types of plates and how are they different?
Continental: thicker and lighter
Oceanic: thinner and denser
Describe how a convergent plate boundary works and where you can find it
A convergent plate boundary is where the denser plate will slide under then less dense plate and cause a subduction zone to form. This happens with either continental to continental, oceanic to oceanic, or oceanic to continental.
Give an example of where you could find each type of convergent plate boundaries
C to C: Himalayas
O to O: Japan and the Aleutian Islands
O to C: Cascades and the Andes
