What are Proteins?
Proteins = Compounds cmposed of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and amino acids. Some amino acids also contain sulfer.
What are Amino Acids?
Amino Acids = The building blocks of proteins.
Each has an amine grouop at one end, an acid group at the other, and a distinctive side chain.
What is an Amine?
Amine = the nitrogen containing portion of an amino acid.
Side Chain
The unique chemical structure attached to the backbone of each amino acid that differentiates one amino acid from another.
Essential Amino Acids
Amino Acids that either cannot be synthesized at all by the body or cannot be synthesized in amounts sufficient to meet physiological need.
Also called Indispensable Amino Acids.
Conditionally Essential Amino Acid
An amino acid that is normally non-essential but must be supplied by the diet in special circumstances when the need for it exceeds the body's ability to produce it.
T or F, the amino acids in a strand of protein are generally the same?
False, A strand of amino acids may contain 20 different kidns of amino acids
How many amino acids make up proteins of living tissues?
About 20
How many essential amino acids are there?
10
Peptide Bond
A bond that connects one amino acid with another, forming a link in a protein chain.
T or F, Protein strands are coiled irregularly due to chemicall attractions among amino acids.
True
What makes protein unique from the other energy units?
They prossess nitrogen side chains.
Collagen
Collagen = the type of protein from which connective tissues such as scars, tendons, ligaments, and the foundations of bones and teeth are made.
Enzymes
Enzyme = proteins that facilitate chemical reactions without being changed in the process; Protein Catalysts
Hemoglobin
Hemoglobin = globular protein of red blood cells, whose Iron atoms carry oxygen around the body via the bloodstream.
