The process of obtaining a nursing license in a new state (while already licensed in another state
Does not have to be retaken nationwide must meet that states requirement
A temporary license which allows the applicant for licensure by endorsement to be employed while credentials are being werfied and processed is available in some states.

Mutual Recognition of licensure
|
Established through the NCSBN based on multistate agreement called Nursing Licensure Compact. or multistate licensure. 23 states have entered. Only need home state license can practice in other states

Renewing License
|
Renews in home state or when relocates to party state renews in party state. In nonparty state need to apply for license in the nonparty state before practicing.

Remote State
|
Is a party state other than the nurse's home state where the patient or recipient of nursing practice is located. Nursing care location is based on where the patient is not where the nurse is . Must comply with that state's law in which the client is located.

Who may institutite disciplinary action
|
Any party state where nursing care occurs (whether home or remote) may institute disciplinary actioned based on appropriate procedures. The home state is notified through NURSYS.

When a remote state insitutes discplinary action what happens
|
It may revoke nurse's privilege to practice in that stayte only. Only the home state may revok the license itself. If it is a party state, discplinary action applies to all party states

What is NURSYS
|
Data bank which contains licensure and disciplinary information for approximately 40 states completed in 2000. It also allows individuals to have their records sent from one state to another when seeking endorsement

What is APRN
|
A separate compact must alos meet expectations for education and licensure requirements.

Concerns Regarding Mutual Recognition of Licenses
|
Board of Nursing can enforce disciplinary process for that state it cannot change the license status of a person who originates in a different state. In remote state can still be licensed in home state cannot practice in remote state. If revoked by home state not valid in all states.

Who is responsible for Discplinary Action
|
The state board conducts hearing and makes decision. Can provide a license with conditions, suspend or revoke. The board's decision may be appealed in a court of law in most states. If felony the board is obligated to report to criminal authorities. Nurse should have aan attorney for any alleged violation of the Nurse Practice Act

Whate is CGFNS
|
For Foreign Nurses special immigration regulations allow foreign nurse to obtain a special preference visa from INS. Must pass NCLEX or CGFNS Assessment of General Nursing Knowledge Examination

What is certification
|
Certification provides evidence of specialized clinical knowledge and ability beyond the basic level.Nurses provide an expert level of practice.
Is a professional credential focusing on knowledge and skill related to a particular area of practice. Documented validation of specific qualifications demonstrated by the RN in the provision of professional nursing care in a defined area of practice. ANCC assumes all of the credentialing activities (created by ANA). 8 national nursing certification programs
All Certification requires passing an exam. Applicants must demonstrate current practice and knowledge beyond that required for licensure as an RN.
National Exam; Cert. period 5 years may renew. Master's degree currently forms the basis of the requirement (Clinical Nurse specialist, Nurse Practitioner, others)
