Scalenes (anterior, middle, posterior)
|
Action: flex neck (when 1st rib is fixed); elevate 1st and 2nd ribs during forced inhalation when neck is fixed
Origin: Transverse processes of cervical vertebrae
Insertion: superior surface of 1st and 2nd ribs
Innervation: cervical spinal nerves
|
Splenius capitis
|
Action: Unilateral action: tuns head to same side; bilateral action: extends head/neck
Origin: ligamentum nuchae
Insertion: occipital bone and mastoid process of temporal bone
Innervation: cervical spinal nerves
|
Trapezius
|
Action: Superior fibers = elevate and superiorly rotate scapula; middle fibers = retract scapula; inferior fibers = depress scapula
Origin: occipital bone (superior nuchal line); ligamentum nuchae; spinous processes of C7-T12
Insertion: clavicle; acromion process and spine of scapula
Innervation: accessory nerve (CN XI)
|
Semispinalis capitis
|
Action: Bilateral action = extends vertebral column/neck unilateral action = laterally flexes vertebral column/neck
Origin: transeverse processes of C4-T12 vertebrae
Insertion: occipital bone and spinous processes of cervical and thoracic vertebrae
Innervation: cervical and thoracic spinal nerves
|
Sternocleidomastoid
|
Action: unilateral action = lateral flexion, rotation of head to opposite side; bilateral action = flexes neck
Origin: manubrium and sternal end of clavicle
Insertion: mastoid process
Innervation: CN XI (accessory nerve)
