Front Back
Overlay (interposition)
Two objects are along the same line of sight, such that the nearer one will occlude part of the remote one form view
Emmert's Law
The overestimation of its distance form the observer causes the images apparent size to be increased
Vertical Position in the Field
If the field of view is flat, the bases of more distant objects are higher in the visual field than those of the closer ones
Apparent Foreshortening
If a straight line is tilted away from the viewer, its length in the picture or drawing is shorter than it would be if the line were perpendicular to the line of sight
Apparent Size
As an object is moved away from an observer it subtends a smaller and smaller angle at the eye such that its retinal image size decreases in direct proportion to its distance
Linear Perspective
The nearer portion of the railings are well separated, but farther away they become closer together (a point artists call the vanishing point)
Texture Gradient
Related to linear perspective as with distance there is a decrease in detail and a crowding of picture elements
Aerial Perspective
Based on the fact that outdoor objects that are farther away appear less clear than those that are nearby and the colour of distant objects is less saturated (both brightness and colour are reducer)
- due to atmospheric scatter that is greater the longer the path of light
- nature of selective absorption and scattering is a function of the type, size and number of scattering particles, as well as the angle of scattering, which is dependent on the location of the sun in the sky
Mie scatter
Form of scatter, where the size of the scattering particles is larger than the wavelength of light
Rayleigh scatter
Light at the short-wavelength end of the spectrum is most affected
- dark objects in the distance appear bluish, and bright objects appear pinkish
Distribution of Light and Shade
Shading lends a 3D texture to objects
Monocular Parallax (motion parallax)
Relative motion of two or more points that accompanies lateral displacement
