What are the three research methods used in Psychology?
Survey/questionnaire
case study
experiment
State one advantage and one disadvantage of using a survey.
Efficient way to obtain much information from a large number of people

Results can be biased; people may not answer questions truthfully, may give socially acceptable answers, or may feel pressured to answer in certain ways.
Define the term 'case study'.
A case study is an in-depth analysis of the thoughts, feelings, beliefs, experiences, behaviors, or problems of a single individual.
State the problems with case studies.
Error and bias.
Detailed information about a particular person may not apply to others
What is a placebo?
Mock medicine; some intervention that resembles medical therapy but which in fact, has no medical effects
Explain the placebo effect.
A change in the patient’s illness that is attributable to an imagined treatment rather than to a medical treatment.
What is a correlation?
An association or relationship between the occurrence of two or more events
Explain 'postive correlation coefficient'.
Indicates that as one event tends to increase, the second event tends to, but does not always, increase.
What is the 'problem' with correlation?
It does not identify what causes what.
What are the four research techniques?
Interviews/questionnaires
Laboratory experiments
Animal model
Standardized tests
What are the seven rules for conducting an experiment?
Ask
Identify
Choose
Assign
Manipulate
Measure
Analyze
Differentiate between independent and dependent variables.
Independent: a treatment or something that the researcher controls or manipulates

Dependent: what you measure in the experiment and what is affected by treatment or independent variable.
