What is the difference between resident and transient microflora?
Resident microlflora are with us forever, transient are microbes we pick up in the environment and can be eliminated

Advantages- provide competition for pathogens
Disadvantages- opportunistic diseases, and body odor

Steptococcus mutans- cavities
S.mitic, S. salivarius - lactic acid that erodes tooth enamel

Specialized microbes due to lack of nutrients:
-Yeast & lactic acid bacteria

Advantage- competition for pathogens
Disadvantage- opportunist disease, yeast canturn into a yeast infection
