Front Back
State two physical properties on the basis of which metals can be distinguished from non metals
The metals can be hammered into thin sheets because it is malleable where as non metals is brittle

the metals can be drawn into thin wires because it is ductile but non metals are not ductile
Name the gas produced when aluminium foil reacts with dilute hydrochloric acid
Hydrogen gas
Name the gas produced when sodium hydroxide reacts with aluminium foil
Hydrogen gas
State two physical properties for believing that aluminium is a metal
It is metal because it can be hammered into thin sheets and make it into aluminium foil because of being malleable

aluminium can be drown into wires because of its ductile property

Compare the properties of metals and non metals with resect to

malleability

ductility

and conduction of heat and electricity
The metals can be bent to form objects of different shapes because of malleability propert whereas non metals are brittle and break easily

the metals can be drawn into wires because of its ductile property like copper wire but non metal are not ductile and break on stretching

metals are good conductor of heat and electricity.they allow the heat and electricity to pass through whereas non metals are poor conductor of heat and electricity
Why copper metal is used for making electric wires
This is because copper metal is ductile and can easily be drawn into wires and it is also good conductor of electricity
Graphite is used for making electrode in a cell
Being a good conductor of electricity it is used for making electrodes in a cell
Immersion rods for heating liquids are made of metallic substances.
It is because metals are good conductor of heat and electricity
Define malleability
The property which allows the metals to be hammered into thin sheets is called malleability eg aluminium are hammered to make aluminium foils

Define ductility
The property which allows the metals to be drawn into wires is called ductility.eg copper wires
What is meant by saying that metals are
malleable
ductile
lustrous
sonorous
By saying malleable it means that metals can be bent to form objects of different shapes by beating with hammer

the property which allows the metals to be drawn into wires is called ductile

the metals which has a shiny appearance is called lustrous

the metal which makes a ringing sound is called sonorous
There are two boxes one made of metal and the other made of wood which are similar in appearance.how will you find out which box is made of metal
If the box is shiny in appearance and produce ringing sound on striking the the box is made of metal
Consider the following materials and identify which are malleable and ductile and which one is brittle

copper,sulphur,phosphorus,carbon,gold,silver
Malleable and ductile:- copper,gold,silver

brittle:- sulphur,phosphorus,carbon
Can you hold a hot metallic pan which is without a plastic or a wooden handle?give reason for your answer
No I can't hold it because metal is a good conductor of heat and electricity and if pan is without plastic or wooden handle which are bad conductors of heat and electricity.i will burn my hand
The screw driver used by an electrician has a plastic or wooden handle.why?
It is because the tip of the screw driver is made of metal and metal being good conductor of heat and electricity.the electrician will get electrocuted so that's why handle is made of plastic
