Alimentary canal / gastrointestinal (GI) tract

The digestive system. A tube starting at the mouth, where food enters the body, and ending at the anus, where solid waste products are excreted from the body.

Oral Cavity
|
Buccal cavity. The beginning of the alimentary tract.

The Teeth
|
Perform mastication(chewing, tearing, and grinding) of food.
|
Salivary Glands
|
The oral cavity contains three pairs of these: Sublingual glands, submandibular glands, and parotid glands.

Pharynx
|
Throat
|
Uvula
|
Soft fleshy v-shaped tissue.
|
Trachea
|
One of two tubes in the low portion of the pharynx that leads to the lungs.
|
Esophagus
|
One of two tubes in the low portion of the pharynx that leads to the stomach.
|
Epiglottis
|
Small flap of tissue that covers the trachea while swallowing.
|
Stomach
|
First major site of digestion. Located in the LUQ of the abdominal cavity.
|
Duodenum
|
First part of the small intestine.
|
Small intestine
|
Continuation of the GI tract. A coiled 20 foot long tube. Consists of the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum.

Jejunum
|
Middle division of the small intestines.
|
Ileum
|
Lower division of the small intestines.
|
Large intestines
|
The large bowel, about 5 feet long, extends from ileum to the anus. Consists of the cecum, colon, rectum, and anal canal.
