The Skeletal system has many important functions.
1) Framework of the Body
2) Support and Protect the internal organs
3) Muscles, ligaments, and tendons make it possible for wide variety of body movements
4) Calcium (req. for normal nerve and body function) are stored in the bones
5) Red bone marrow (w/c is located within spongy bone) has an important function in the formation of blood cells

Structures of the Skeletal System

Bones
Cartilage
Ligaments
Joints
Bursa

Structure of the Bones
Bone is a from of Connective Tissue and is almost the hardest tissue in the human body. Only dental enamel is harder than bone.
The Tissues of Bone
Although it is very hard and dense, bone is a living structure that changes and is capable of healing itself.
Periosteum
The tough, fibrous tissue that forms the outermost covering of bone.
Compact Bone
The hard, dense, and very strong bone that forms the outer layer of the bones.
Spongy Bone
Lighter and not as strong as compact bone, it is usually found in the ends and inner portions of long bones such as the femur. Red bone marrow is located w/in this spongy bone.
Medullary Cavity
Located in the shaft of a long bone, the medullary cavity is surrounded by compact bone and contains yellow bone marrow. Medullary means pertaining to the inner section.
Endosteum
The tissue that forms the lining of the medullary cavity.
Bone Marrow
...
Red Bone Marrow
Which is located within the spongy bone,is hemopoietic and manufactures red blood cells, hemoglobin, white blood cells, and thrombocytes.
Hemopoietic (aka Hematopoietic)
Pertaining to the formation of blood cells
Yellow Bone Marrow
Which is found in the medullary cavity, is composded chiefly of fat cells nad functions as a fat storage area.
Cartilage
...
Cartilage
Is the smooth, rubbery, blue-white connective tissue that acts as a shock absorber between bones. More elastic than bone, makes up the flexible parts of the skeleton such as the outer ear and tip of the nose.
