4 types of tissue
Muscle, nerve, epithelial, & connective
Where is epithelial tissue found?
The skin
2 types of epithelial tissue
Epithelium and endothelium
Name and describe 3 categories based on cell shape
1. squamous - flat2. cuboidal - cube like3. columnar - tall and thin
What is simple squamous epithelium
Single layer of thin flat cells. normally where diffusion takes place
Simple cuboidal epithelium
Single layer of cube like cells, contains organelles which produce ATP. controls active transport.
Simple columnar epithelium
Tall and thin (single layer) large cells which have organelles that enable them to perform complex tasks. (such as digestion)
Stratified squamous epithelium
Consists of many layers, the columnar divide and produce new cells. The ones that are created are pushed to the top and become thin and flat (squamous)
Psudostratified Epithelium
Appears to be stratified but not. 1 layer with all the cells attached to the basement.
Transitional epithelium
Special type, many layers (stratified) that can be stretched. As they are stretched the cells change shape from cuboidal to squamous and the number of cell layers decrease.
What is the primary purpose of connective tissue?
Protection and support
Soft connective tissue is known as what?
Adipose or fatty tissue
What are the 4 functions of soft connective tissue?
1. stores fat which can be converted to energy2. heats the body and absorbs shock3/ helps maintain heat4. holds and connects various body parts (fibrous connective tissue)
Hard connective tissue (i.e.?)
Bones (rigid) and cartilage (firm flexible support of the embryonic skeleton and part of the adult skeleton.)
Ligaments
Strong flexible bands of connective tissue that hold bones firmly together at joints
