Marie Curie was a famous female scientest whose discoveries changed the world.

Marya Slodowska was born in Warsaw, Poland on November 7, 1867.

Her sister and mother died early in her life. Despite a sad childhood, she still graduated high school and was the top student.

She moved to Paris to study in college and changes her name to Marie. Despite her struggtles with the language and often hungry, she worked hard and was the first woman to earn a degree in physics from Sorbonne University.

In 1895 she married the famous scientist Pierre Curie and has two daughters. She was granted the privledge of teaching high school to girls.

Marie and Pierre discovered polonium in 1898. Marie, along with Pierre and Henri Becquerel, were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. She was the first woman to earn this prize.

In 1902 she discovered another element, radium. In 1911, she wins another Nobel Peace Prize and becomes the first person to win two.

In 1914, she used radium to make x-rays so that doctors could check for broken bones. It was very useful during wartime.

She visited the war fronts to teach nurses and doctors how to use x-ray machines.

On July 4, 1934, Marie Curie died from overexposure to radiation. It is ironic that the element she discovered caused her death.
