Lymphatic System Vocabulary

Welcome to my online human anatomy and physiology electronic classroom. This set of vocabulary flashcards  was built to help you understand the lymphatic system. It has two important functions for the human body. One - maintenance of fluid balance for the internal environment and Two - immunity!    You will find additional learning resources on my science website: Mitchell's Cosmic Adventure. ProProfs flashcards has three modes of learning. (1) Flashcard Flip Quick Learning; (2) Flashcard Quiz Mode; and (3) Flashcard Right/Wrong Flip Mode. Good Luck!

Front Back
Lymph
Is a colorless fluid containing white blood cells, that bathes the tissues and drains through the lymphatic system into the bloodstream.
Question 2
Peyer's Patches
Are small masses of lymphatic tissue found throughout the ileum region of the small intestine. Also known as aggregated lymphoid nodules, It prevents the growth of pathogenic bacteria in the intestines.
Lymphatic Vessels
Or lymph vessels are thin walled, valved structures that carry lymph.
Question 4
Lymphatic Capillaries
Are tiny, thin-walled vessels located in the spaces between cells (except in the central nervous system and non-vascular tissues) which serve to drain and process extra-cellular fluid.
Question 5
Lymph Lacteals
Is a lymphatic capillary that absorbs dietary fats in the villi of the small intestine. Triglycerides are emulsified by bile and hydrolyzed by the enzyme lipase, resulting in a mixture of fatty acids and monoglycerides.
Question 6
Right Lymphatic Duct
Drains lymph from the right upper limb, right side of thorax and right halves of head and neck. The thoracic duct drains lymph into the circulatory system at the left brachiocephalic vein between the left subclavian and left internal jugular veins.
Question 7
Thoracic (lymphatic) Duct
Is the largest lymphatic vessel of thelymphatic system. It is also known as the left lymphatic duct, alimentary duct, and chyliferous duct.It carries chyle.
Question 8
Chyle
A milky fluid consisting of fat droplets and lymph. It drains from the lacteals of the small intestine into the lymphatic system during digestion.
Question 9
Cisterna chyli
(receptaculum chyli) is a dilated sac at the lower end of the thoracic duct into which lymph from the intestinal trunk and two lumbar lymphatic trunks flow.
Lymphatic vessels resemble veins in structure with these exceptations (1):
1. Lymphatic vessels have thinner walls
Lymphatic vessels resemble veins in structure with this exceptation (2):
Lymphatic vessels contain more valves
Lymphatic vessels resemble veins in structure with this exceptation (3):
Lymphatic vessels contain lymph nodes at selected intervals
Lymphatic vessels resemble veins in structure with this exceptation (4):
Lymphatic capillaries are slightly larger in diameter than blood capillaries, and have closed ends
Question 14
Lymphatic Capillaries have a characteristic (a) -
Unique structure permits interstitial fluid to flow into them but not out.
Question 15
Lymphatic Capillaries have a characteristic (b) -
When pressure is greater in the interstitial fluid than in lymph, the cells separate slightly, like the opening of a one-way swinging door, and interstitial fluid enters the lymphatic capillary.
