Case study on snakes
The coral snakes and the king snakes
coral snakes are deadly and the king snakes resemble them color wise. most predators don't attack king snakes because they mistake them for coral snakes. |
Elements of an experiment
Experimental variable (independent/dependent)
experimental group control group standards |
Experimental group
Group that recieves experimental variable
Control group
Group that does not recieve the experimental variable and forms the basis to evaluate the results of the experimental variable
Independent variable
Variable that the investigator manipulates
x axis controlled variable |
Dependent variable
Variable that changes due to manipulation of independent variable
y-axis response variable |
Standards
Elements that remain the same in the control and experimental groups
Binocular dissecting microscope (stereomicroscope)
Reflects light
large space for manipulation surface structures thick specimen 3-dimensional image moves same way as slide does |
Compound light micrscope
Light shines through specimen
2-dimensional movies opposite and upside down |
How to focus a compound light microscope
1. always start at the lowest power lens
2. always begin focusing on lowest power 3. with coarse-adjustment knob, lower the stage until it stops 4. place slide under clips 5. adjust stage until the lens come to a stop or is closer than 33mm above the sldie 6. look into eyepiece and rotate diaphragm to give max amount of light 7. use coarse adjustment knob, slowing increase the distance between the stage and the objective lens until the object comes into focus 8. once in focus, you can adjust the light 9. use the fine-adjustment knob to sharpen focus if necessary |
How to focus the binocular dissecting microscope
1. place the plastomount that contains small organisms in the center
2. adjust distance between eye pieces 3.use focusing knob to bring into focus 4. turn magnification changing knob and determine the kind of mechanism on your microscope. zoom mech- continuous viewing while adjusting |
What happens to the field of view as magnification increases?
Gets smaller
What does the light microscope do to an image besides making it look larger? (two things)
Picture is inverted
light passes through clear portions and not opaque portions |
What tests are used to detect the presence of the simple sugars?
Test tube with cm of substance, 5 drops of benedict's reagent, heat in a boiling water bath for 5-10 min
if sugar is present, a green to orange-red color appears negative test - light blue |
