What are Glia?
Non-neural cells in the NS
Functions include:
-Support neurons physically
-Supply neurons with nutrients and oxygen
-Insulate neurons from each other
-Protect neurons from pathogens and clean out dead neurons
-Modulate/regulate neural activity
How many glia are there in the CNS?
About 100 billion (1/2 of CNS volume, equal amount to neurons)
What are the functions of astrocytes?
-Structural support for neurons
-help create the blood brain barrier (BBB)
-provide nutrients to neurons
-modulate neural activity through reuptake of neurotransmitters and regulation of ion concentration
What are the functions of oligodendrocytes and Schwann cells?
Wrap axons in mylin s to insulate them and speed conducation of action potentials
Schwann cells in PNS
Oligodendrocytes in CNS
What are Ependymal Cells?
Answer 5
-CNS
-line the ventricles
-have cillia that move to aid in circulation of cSF
-produce CSF
What are the functions of microglia?
Answer 6
Macrophages that devour and digest cellular debris (phagocytosis)
What are the Body Centric names for anatomical directions?
Dorsal=back
Ventral=belly
Rostral = nose
Caudal = Tail
--> this curves as you get up to the brain in humans.
What are the Space centric names for anatomical directions?
Superior = above
Inferior = Below
Anterior= before (front)
Posterior = after (the back)
Question 9
What kind of section is this?
Horizontal/ Transverse / Axial
Question 10
What kind of section is this?
Coronal/Frontal
Question 11
What kind of section is this?
Saggital
Question 12
In this midsagittal view of the brain, the area X is _____ to area Y?
A. Dorsal and Caudal
B. Dorsal and Rostral
C. Ventral and Caudal
D. Ventral and Rostral?
B. Dorsal and Rostral
Describe the Somatic system (of the PNS)
-Voluntary control of action
-somatosensory (from skin to brain)
Motor (from brain to muscles)
Describe the Autonomic system (of the PNS)
Sympathetic and parasympathetic :
regulation of involuntary functions :
-heart, Gut, Glands, etc
What are the two divisions of the PNS?
Somatic and autonomic
