What is the Innate Defense of the Immune System?
Non-Specific defense
What are the two types of innate defenses?
1) Surface Barriers 2) Internal Defenses
What type of defense is the surface barrier considered?
The first line of defense
What are the four factors in the surface barriers, or the first line of defense?
1) Cutaneous membrane (The Skin) 2) Mucous membranes 3) Acidity of secretions 4) Enzymes
How is the cutaneous membrane (skin) a line of defense?
The skin has an outer layer of protective keratin
How do the mucous membranes provide a line of defense?
They produce mucous secretions that contain protective chemicals to trap microbes, also contain cilia that sweep trapped particles out of body
Which secretions are acidic, and how do they protect the body?
Acidic pH of sweat and HCl in gastric secretions, acidity kills microbes
What is the acid mantle?
The acidity of perspiration
What enzymes provide defense for the body?
Lysozymes found in tears and salivia
What is another name for the internal defense of the body?
The second line of defense
What are the 5 factors of the internal defenses, or the second line of defense?
1) Phagocytes 2) Natural Killer (NK) cells 3) Inflammation 4) Antimicrobial proteins 5) Fever
What are phagocytes?
A general name for cells that capture and destroy pathogens
What are the 3 types of phagocytes?
1) Macrophages 2) Neutrophils 3) Eosinphils
What are macrophages?
Derived from blood monocytes and are known by different names based on specific location
What are the two types of macrophages
1) Free macrophages 2) Fixed macrophages
