Eastern peoples, from modern day turkey. ionian order, built in stone. more feminine, floral, bigger temples

700-630/600 BC-Greeks travelled in ships all around the Mediterranean. Their art moved, contact with Eastern and more ancient cultures. Egypt, Oriental area, monster gods. Saw Egypt’s use of monumental architecture in stone. Greeks at the time were using mudbricks. Greeks were inspired.

Eleusis Amphora 750 BC Story of Odysseus. Polyphemus going to eat them. They get him drunk, and bind him. Definition of thigh, knee, etc. All figures in black silhouettes

Mantiklos Apollo 700-680 BCFound at Thebes. 8-9 inches tall. Shrine of Apollo – god of art, music, poetry. Used as offering to the Gods. Everything is quite angular, but out of proportion. Late 600s BC. Draws in/molds in muscles. Much more 3D than on vases. Trying for naturalism, not really succeeding

Space for statue of god/goddess. Mudbrick walls. Single room, porch/portico

-Ionic born in East – Western Turkey – Ionia, around 575-560 BC. Established by 550 BC

TEMPLE OF HERA AT OLYMPIA archaic -600-580 BC. Shows influence of Egypt. Ratio 8:3. Still has wooden columns. Vary column style because each time one was replaced it was in the latest style

TEMPLE OF APHAIA AT AEGINA archaic -Smaller. 2:1 ratio. Entasis – base of columns. Entases are smaller here. Entablature relatively smaller. Columns more slender, entablature more contained
