What is democracy?
Thin = voting, basic processes
thick = various values associated with democracy, like freedom
Is Democracy the antidote for the world’s evils, or is it a form of Western political and cultural dominance? Does the spread of democracy make the world safer for everyone?
- democracy doesn't necessarily make every country safer, especially when forced. What generally happens is strong states used their advanced political/military power to enforce a system that works within their nation, but not necessarily a weaker, less developed nation.
- The war in Iraq/Afghanistan is proof that implementation of democracy isn't safer for everyone.
What is the criteria for measuring democracy?
- measured according to electoral processes, function of the government, political participation, political culture, and civil liberties
Explain the Bush national security method.
- best defense is a good offense, strike before your enemies have the chance, the U.S. has responsibility to create democracy
