Who was the Lanista?

The one who owns and trains gladiators. Lanista's regularly bought slaves to fight in the arena.

What was the Ludus?
|
A school for gladiators where they trained and lived. Gladiators learned to how to use many types of weapons such as swords, daggers, net and tridents. There were four main Ludus schools in Rome and each school often dealt in specific training, such as the fighting of animals.

Who was the Editor?
|
The editor of the game, whether senator, emperor or other politico, made the final decisions about the fates of the gladiators in the arena. However, since the games were to curry public favour, the editor has to pay attention to the wishes of the audience.

What was a Tesserrae?
|
It is a theater ticket. Stamped into a clay shard was an entrance aisle and row number.

What was the Pompa?
|
The pompa was the ceremony where gladiators were lef into the arena and paraded around for the crowd to see. This involved music and other forms of entertainment.

What does "Mitte" mean?
|
Mitte was shouted by the crowd when a gladiator was defeated by his opponent. Translated it means "spare him". Whether the gladiator would be spared or not was ultimately up to the Editor who made the final decision on who lived and who died. However, he did have to listen to the cries of the crowd and base his judgement on that.

What does "Lugula" mean?
|
Lugula was another phrase shouted by the bloodthirsty crowd. It means "Kill him".

What does "Pollice Verso/ Recto mean?
|
Recto means thumbs up and Verso means thumbs down. This was a signal given by the Editor. Thumbs up means the winning gladiator had the right to kill his fallen foe and thumbs down means that his life should be spared.

What does Ad Dignitum mean?
|
Ad Dignitum describes the ability of a gladiator to make his foe surrender without mortally wounding or killing him. In this instance the defeated gladiator would throw down his weapons and raise one finger as a sign of capitulation (the act of surrendering)

What is the Sine Missione?
|
Sine Missione was a special kind of arena combat where the gladiators had to fight to the death.
