Front Back
What was the first GIS?
Canada Land inventory
What/When were the 3 stages of GIS History?
60s/70s - Innovation 80s - Commercialization 2000s - Exploitation
What are the scales of measurement? (4)
Nominal Ordinal Interval Ratio
What is Nominal data?
Basically yes or no, T/F, 0/1, = or ≠
What is Ordinal data?
Ranked order, like soil classes. = / ≠, < / >
What is Interval data?
0 is not meaningful, like Temperature celcius.
What is Ratio data?
0 is meaningful.
What is a cylindrical projection? Where is there distortion? What is preserved?
Light in a circular room analogy. Continuos picture of the Earth. Countries near the equator in true relative postitions. Distance increases between countries towards top and bottom. The view of the poles is very distorted. Area is mostly preserved
What is an azimuthal projection? Where is there distortion? What is preserved?
Light in a square room with flat walls analogy. Only a part of the Earth's surfact is visible. Distortion will occur at all four edges. Distance is mostly preserved.
What is a conic projection? What is distorted? What is preserved?
Light in a teepee analogy. Area is distorted, Distance is distorted towards the bottom of the image. Scale is mostly preserved
What is a geographic coordinate system?
A 3D coordinate system. Ex) Longitude/Latitude
What is a rectangular Coordinate system?
2D system.Ex) UTM referencing system.
What is the UTM referencing system?
Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system. Divides the Earth into a 2D grid of 60 zones.
What is a non-coordinate system?
Other types of spatial classification systems like Postal codes and Census tracts
What is the Modifiable Areal Unit Problem (MAUP)?
Since space is malleable - there is no fixed geography - every study could develop their own spatial units.
