How do Rocks Respond to force and stress?
Rocks are effected by weight of overlying rocks, tectonic forces pushing or pulling, from cooling and heating, and from presurizedfluid such as water and magma.
What does displacement due to rocks and how are rocks effected by it?
Displacement: A volume of rock being moved or displaced from one place to another. A rock can change shape as it moves
What does rotation due to rocks and how are rocks effected by it?
Rotation: A volume of rock being rotated in response to stresses. Rotation can tilt the rock or spin it horizontally.
What does strain due to rocks and how are rocks effected by it?
Stress: A rock gets effected by sttress by deforming internally changing size or shape.
What is a brittle deformation? |
Brittle deformation: when any material of a rock breaks into pieces.
What is a ductile deformation? |
Ductile deformation: When rocks bend or flow like clay.
What is compression stress?
Stress that pushes in on the rock, this is what makes a normal fault.
What is tension stress?
Stress that is pulling directly outward from the rock, this is what makes a reverse fault.
What is shear stress?
Stress that has pressure pushing on the edges in opposite directions, this is what makes a strike-slip fault.
What are joints?
Joints are cracks where rocks has been pulled a part
What are faults and fractures?
A fault is a fracture where rocks have slipped past one another. A fault can slip up, down or sideways.
What is a normal fault?
A fault that occurs with compression stress which makes the footwall(the wal with an angle that coult be walked across) higher then the hanging wall(the wall with an angle that you could hang things on but cant walk on)
What is a reverse fault?
A fault that occurs with tension stress which makes the
hanging wall(the wall with an angle that you could hang things on
but cant walk on) higher then
the footwall(the wall with an angle that coult be walked across)
What is a Strike-slip fault?
A fault that has the rocks moving from side to side.
What is an anticline fold?
A fold that is in the shape of an A. The oldest layer as well is the bottom most layer of the A shape fold.
