Explain the difference between a population and a sample?
A population is the entire group of individuals that we want information on. Unfortunately this is not always possible! If we can’t consider each individual in the entire population, we instead take a sample. A sample group of individuals that we are actually able to obtain information from.
Define Qualitative
Allow for classification of individuals based on some attribute or characteristic.
Define Quantitative
Provide numerical measures of individuals. Arithmetic operations such as addition and subtraction can be performed on the values of a quantitative variable and will provide meaningful results.
Qualitative or Quantitative?
Number of Siblings
Quantitative
Qualitative or Quantitative?
Number on a football player's jersey
Qualitative
Qualitative or Quantitative?
Number of unpopped kernels in a bag of ACT microwave popcorn
Quantitative
Discrete or Continuous?
Volume of water lost each day through a leaky faucet
Continuous
Discrete or Continuous?
At rest pulse rate of a 20-year-old college student
Discrete(Pulse rate is always a certain number of beats per minute. Usually it’s around 60, or 61, or 62, etc…)
A large community college has noticed that an increasing number of full-time students are working while attending the school. The administration randomly selects 128 students and asks this question: How many hours per week do you work?
The population is all students who go to school full time. The sample is the 128 students that are actually interviewed
True or False: An observational study measures the characteristics of a population by attempting to manipulate or influence the variables of interest.
False
Observational study or experiment.
While shopping, 200 people are asked to perform a taste test in which they drink from two unmarked cups. They are then asked which drink they prefer.
Experiment  The type of drink is the treatment.
A ______ is obtained by dividing the population into groups and selecting all individuals from within a random sample of the groups.
Cluster sample
True or False: When taking a systematic random sample of size n, every group of size n from the population has that same chance of being selected.
False  This is true only for simple random samples
A radio station asks its listeners to call in their opinion regarding the use of U.S. forces in peacekeeping missions.
Convenience sample
A school official divides the student population into five classes: freshman, sophomore, junior, and graduate student. The official takes a simple random sample from each class and asks the members' opinions regarding student services.
Stratified random sample
