Mixed Numbers to Improper Fractions |
1. Multiply the whole number by the denominator, then
add the numerator. |
Improper Fractions to Mixed Numbers |
1. Divide the numerator by the denominator.
*The quotient is the whole number. *The denominator stays the same. *The remainder is the new numerator. |
Factors |
Factors are the numbers multiplied together to get a product.
4 x 5= 20 4 and 5 are the factors. 20 is the product. Factors of 20: 20: 1, 2, 4, 5, 10, 20 |
Equivalent Fractions |
Fractions which have the same value are called equivalent Fractions.
To find equivalent fractions, multiply or divide the fraction by 1 whole. |
Greatest Common Factor GCF (Used to simplify or reduce fractions to lowest terms.) |
The greatest common factor (GCF) is used to simplify or reduce fractions.
1. Find the factors of the numerator and denominator. 2. Select the greatest of the factors they have in common. 3. Divide the numerator and denominator by the GCF. |
Adding and Subtracting Like Fractions (same denominators) |
If the fractions have like denominators, add or subtract the numerators. The denominator stays the same because you are working with the same kind of fraction.
|
Adding Unlike Fractions (different denominators) |
****Always check
the denominators*** 1. Rewrite the fractions with like denominators: -List the multiples of each denominator. -Use the Least Common Multiple (LCM) as the Least Common Denominator. -Rewrite each Fraction as an equivalent fraction with the LCM/LCD as the denominator. -Add the numerators -Write the sum in lowest terms. |
