The submission of human beings to the guidance of God as revealed through the prophet Muhammed4. The submission of the followers of Muhammed to God’s practical Instructions
What is the meaning of the word din?
Din: Whereby one serves God, belief in the unity of God. Often reserved for Islam. (Some meanings of Din can bring it closer to Dayn, a term that ties the notion of debt to islam)
In what way is it related to the term “islam?”
Related to islam because din is the system of practices by which people specify themselves as Muslims. This means that they must submit to the guidance of God as revealed through the prophet Muhammed and submit to the practical instructions dictated by God through Muhammed, thereby demonstrating their piety.
What are the 5 pillars of Islam?
1. Bearing Witness2. Prayer (Salat)3. Fasting During Ramadan4. Alms (Zakat)5. Hajj
Bearing Witness
Accepting and Reciting a. “There is no God but God” (This makes you a monotheist but not a Muslim) b.”And Muhammed is his prohet” (this makes you a Muslim)
Prayer (Salat)
1. Ritually structured with set phrases and physical motions (raka), traditionally done 5 times per day but it’s more flexible in modern times.2. Ties you to God through prayer by interrupting your day. The whole community does it and on Fridays everyone congregates for a communal prayer (khutuba). A prayer done with another person is worth more.
Fasting During Ramadan
1. Nothing should pass through your lips except air. Reading the Qur’an, you sing it and it is reverant because your words are curative. When it ends after 30 days everyone comes together for a big celebration. 2. This is a constant reminder/remembrance of God because everyone is doing it and it can impact entire cities. It also reminds Muslims of the less fortunate.
Alms (Zakat)
1. Another way to bear witness, it is like an income tax that used to be given to a mosque but is now given to a Muslim charity. Originally to protect women and orphans. Alms were originally given to mosques because that is where people went when they needed to be cared for.2. Makes you recognize that what you have is due to God and you give it back to the community.
Hajj
1. Once in a lifetime because in the 9th century you could die doing it. Consists of the physical act of being in a sacred center, being in the presence of God (for Muslims, the Ka'ba represents the presence of God on earth), circumambulation represents being as close to God's presence as possible. 2. Brings you close to community because everyone does it at some point if they can and the Hajj brings you as to close to God physically as you can be.
What are the two claims to which one must bear witness? What is the significance of each?
A. “There is no God but God” (This makes you a monotheist but not a Muslim) b.”And Muhammed is his prohet” (this makes you a Muslim)
When are Muslims obligated to pray?
1. Pre-dawn 2. Noon3. Afternoon 4. Sunset 5. Evening
The First Surrah
In the name of GodThe CompassionateThe MercifulPraise be to God, Lord of the Universe,The Compassionate, the Merciful,Sovereign of the Day of Judgement! You alone we worship, and to You alone we turn for help.Guide us to the straight path,The path of those whom You have favoured,Not of those who have incurred Your wrath,Nor of those who have gone astray.
Where must one pray?
In a clean place, facing Mecca
What are the Satanic Verses? What is their significance?
1. Have you considered al-Lat, Al-Uzza, Manat the third the other? These are the (swans) whose intercession is to be hoped for. Muhammed wanted to convert his fellow kinsmen and neighbors in Mecca to Islam and this was him backing away from monotheism due to his temptation from Satan. Gabriel chastises him and he says the following:2. Are you to have sons and he daughters? That is indeed an unfair distinction. Radically monotheist conception at time of retraction.
