Front Back
BIAS
What someone wants to believe.
WORKABILITY
Information gained by the scientific method if it can be used in other circumstances.
SPONTANEOUS GENERATION
Life comes from nonliving substances - evolution. (Van Helmont, John Needham)
BIOGENESIS
The concept that only living things can generate living things. (Francesco Redi, Louis Pastuer)
WHY IS A LARGE PROBLEM MORE DIFFICULT TO DEAL WITH THAN A SMALL ONE WHEN USING THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD?
The larger the problem the more variables there are to control.
WHY CAN SCIENCE NOT PROVE A UNIVERSAL STATEMENT?
A universal statement includes terms such as, all, always, no, or never making it impossible to prove through experimentation.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TERMS VALID & PROVED?
Valid is useable but does not mean its correct or workable.
LIST & DESCRIBE FOUR OF 8 LIMITATIONS OF SCIENCE
A)must deal w/ observable, measurable phenomena(b)can only decribe not explain(c)no experim't can b completely controlled(d)observ. may b faulty
LIST 2 AREA OF HUMAN CONCERN IN WHICH SCIENTIFIC METHOD OF PROBLEM SOLVING IS USELESS, WHY?
A)it cannot make value judgements or moral decisions (b)cannot be used to establish truth, cannot prove any statement beyond all doubt.
LIST & DESCRIBE 2 MORE OF 8 LIMITATIONS OF SCIENCE
(e)man's beliefs affect his judgem't (f)must deal w/ repeatable results
HOW DID VAN HELMONT TRY TO PROVE SPONTANEOUS GENERATION?
Mice could be spontaneously generated by using sweaty rags, wheat grain in a dusty box.
HOW DID JOHN NEEDHAM TRY TO PROVE SPONTANEOUS GENERATION?
Infusions & microbes. He assumed his infusions where sterile where microbes grew spontaneously.
HOW DID FRANCESCO REDI PROVE BIOGENESIS?
Jars of meat. Maggots & flies found in the uncovered jars, not in the covered jars.
HOW DID LOUIS PASTEUR PROVE BIOGENESIS?
Swan-neck flask experiement, kept air & dust from infusions.
LIST & DESCRIBE THE LAST 2 OF 8 LIMITATIONS OF SCIENCE
G)can't deal w/ values/morals(h)can't prove a universal statem't(i)can't est. truth
