Define the sociological imagination:

What is sociology? List 3 definitional points from Reece McGee:
1. study of human groups & their influence on individuals- religious group, ethnic group influences behavior
ex: age group, male/female, etc.
2. study of social order & social change:
social order- consistency, how things stay the same day after day
ex: drive on right side of road in USA
social change- the differences that occur from day to day (some soc changes take a long time to occur)
ex: women can now vote
3. search for social causes- what are the causes of social events?
ex: why do things happen? what makes things happen? What happened? How do things happen? Who was involved? When did it happen? When did it happen?

An inherited, invariant, complex behavior response to external stimuli which is incapable of voluntary modification
Do human beings have instincts?

Define folkways:
Relatively unimportant rules that if violated are not severely punished
ex: skipping in the hallway
Define mores:
Important norms, the violation of which results in severe punishment
ex: fraud or stealing
Define taboos:
The violation of these norms is unthinkable, so the punishment ranges from extremely severe (death) to nothing
Define a social system:
Complex whole composed of many parts
Define material culture:
Objects, structures, etc.
Define non-material culture:
Attitudes, beliefs, values, etc.
Define symbols:
Symbol is a thing that represents something else, a thing that stands for something else, it is socially accepted.
