The importance of the title has to do with trespassing. An interloper is a trespasser and having the wolves end the story suggests that the men were the real trespassers. The wolves are the ones who have possession.

The theme is related to feuds. One message could be that feuds all have the potential to end such as Ulrich and Georg agreeing to stop fighting. Another message is that feuds kill as the men wouldn't have been alone in the forest if they weren't feuding.
