The science of animal behavior
Behavioral Ecology
Stud of ecological and evolutionary basis for animal behavior and the roles of behavior in enabling an animal to adapt to its environment
Acquired over time according to experiences of the animal.
Learned Behavior
Innate Behavior
That are not learned; they are preprogrammed and inherited;
What are categories of Innate behavior
-Kinesis-Taxis-Reflexes-Fixed action patterns
Random movement not associated with a stimulus.
Kinesis
Directional movement in response to a stimulus.
Taxis
Positive Taxis and Negative Taxis
-Poistive- movement toward stimulus(bird moving toward food)-Negative-movement away from stimulus(deer going away from gun shot)
Orientation Behaviors
Kinesis and Taxis because the animal orients itself to favorable environmental conditions.
Reflexes
Unlearned, preprogrammed movements of body parts in response to a stimulus: no conscious control. EX: doctor hits your knee
Fixed action patteren
Again a pre-programmed response, but of the entire animal to a stimulus. EX:courtship, breeding, migration, hibernation patterens
Learned behavior
-depends on the individual and species and the experience of that ind.-imprinting, conditioning and habituation
Imprinting
Occurs during critical early period of life; at this time offspring recognizes another individual as a model for its behavior.(typically the female parent)
Habituation
Results from the repeated exposure of an organism to a stimulus causing a decline in an organism's reaction to a stimulus.
Learned Behavior categories
Conditioning, Classical conditioning, Operant conitionng
