What is the approximate black body temperature of the sun?
6,000 K
In which part of the electromagnetic spectrum does the Sun emit the most power? (ex. visible, UV, In-fared [IR], x-rays, etc.)
Visible
How does Visible Light interact with the Earth's atmosphere and surface? Explain
It passes through Earth's atmosphere and is absorbed by the surface.
What is the approximate black body temperature of the Earth?
300K
In which part of the electromagnet spectrum does the Earth emit the most power?
IR
How do IR rays interact with the Earth's atmosphere?
IR rays are absorbed by H2O and CO2. They play a roll in the Greenhouse Effect.
What is different about the atmosphere of Venus compared with Earth that causes it to be much hotter on Venus?
Venus has significantly more CO2 than Earth's atmosphere causing the Greenhouse Effect to be much more extreme.
Why does the first step in the P-P chain take so long?
Because protons repel one another.
What conditions in the core allow the first step to occur? What additional piece of physics is necessary to understand how two protons can fuse together?
The extreme density and heat allow the first step to occur. Quantum tunneling is how two protons can fuse together.
Explain why process gives off energy?
E=MC2 This gives off energy because the mass of 4He is less than 4 protons.
What are the two reasons we know coal burning is not occurring in the sun?
1) The sun would have to be composed of entirely charcoal and oxygen. From emission lines, we can tell this is not the case. 2) Even if the sun was composed of charcoal and oxygen, it would not produce enough energy to keep the sun burning for as long as it has been.
What is Step 1 Part 1 of the PP Chain?
P + P -->
What is Step 1 Part 2 of the PP Chain?
D + e+ + Ve
What is the Sub-Step of Step 1 Part 1 in the PP Chain?
E+ + e- -->
What is the Sub-Step of Step 1 Part 2 in the PP Chain?
2γ + 1.02 MeV
