Direct Presentation
The narrator tells us what the character is like.
Indirect Presentation
The narrator shows us what the character is like; we must infer the character's personalityand motivations through what s/he does, thinks, and says.
Protagonist
Main character, (good or evil)
Antagonist
The character or force opposing the protagonist.
Round
Character that is well developed. (we know a lot about them).
Flat
We don't know much about the character.
Dynamic
The character changes through the story.
Static
The character stays the same throughout the story.
Stock
Stereotyped. A character immediately placed in a group.
Foil
A character who contrasts with another character (usually the protagonist) in order to highlight certain qualities of the other character.
Dialogue
A literary and theatrical form consisting of written or spoken conversational exchange between 2 or more people.
Flashback
When information is presented that happened before the story begins.
Foreshadowing
A warning or hint for the reader about incidents that follow.
Narrator
The entity that tells the story. Not the author.
