Energy
The ability to do work. Energy lets you do the things you do everyday. There are nine types of energy. Chemical, kinetic, gravitational, elastic, electrical, thermal, nuclear, light and sound energy. |
Work
Physical or mental effort. You have to use energy to work. When you are at school and you pick up your pencil to work, you are using energy to pick up the pencil . |
Mechanical Energy
Energy created by either the movement of an object or the location of an object. An elevator and and rollercoaster are examples of mechanical energy. Mechanical energy is created when potential and kinetic energy are combined. |
Kinetic Energy
Energy possessed by an object due to its motion or movement. Throwing a ball, jumping, and riding a bike are all examples if kinetic energy. The larger the object, the more kinetic energy it has. The faster the object, the more kinetic energy it has. |
Potential Energy
Stored energy. A bow and arrow, stretching a rubber band, and letting water flow out of the tap are all examples of potential energy. The higher the object goes, the more potential energy it will have. The more mass an object has, the more potential energy it will have. |
Sound Energy
The form of energy associated with the vibration or disturbance of matter. This type of energy is kinetic energy. Wave motion, music, and vibration are all examples of sound energy |
Chemical Energy
Part of the energy in a substence that can be released by a chemical reaction. This type of energy is potential energy. Coal, fuel, and batteries, are all examples of chemical energy. |
Electrical Energy
Energy made available by the flow of eletric charge through a conductor. This type of energy is kinetic energy. Static electricity, current electricity, and magnetic fields are all examples of eletrical energy. |
Light Energy
The radiant energy of electromagnetic waves in the visable portion of the magnetic spectrum. This type of energy is kinetic energy. Electromagnetic spectrum, solar cells, and radio telescopes are all examples of light energy. |
Heat Energy
Movement in tiny particles called atoms. Heat energy is kinetic energy. There are two types of heat energy, conduction and convection. Thermal is another word for heat. The sun is a good example of heat energy. |
Nuclear Energy
Energy stored in the nucleas of an atom. This type of energy is potential. Nuclear plants and uranium mines are examples of nuclear energy. |
