When the equilibrium of an ecosystem becomes unbalanced, the populations in the ecosystem are most likely to do what?
Decrease in number.
In nature, a population is what?
A group of individuals of the same species living in the same geographic area.
All the ecosystems in the world and their interactions make up the: a) community b) biotic part of the environment c) biosphere d) abiotic part of the environment
C) the biosphere
What are one of the key requirements of all living things?
Energy
What do all organisms use to obtain energy from chemical compounds?
Cellular respiration
What is an indicator species.
Indicator species are organisms that are sensitive to changes in the ecosystem.
What is a hydrogen bond?
A hydrogen bond is formed between the positive end of one water molecule and the negative end of another water molecule.
What two types of atoms are contained in all organic compounds?
Carbon and hydrogen
What is an organic compound?
Organic compounds are
Define the carbon cycle.
The cycle of matter in which carbon atoms move from an inorganic form to an organic form and then back to an inorganic form.
What is combustion? Is it a positive or a negative thing?
Combustion is the chemical reaction that occurs when a substance reacts very quickly with oxygen to release energy.
What is albedo? Name an object with a high albedo and an object with a low albedo.
Albedo is a term used to describe the extent to which surface can reflect light that strikes it.
What is nitrogen fixation?
Two processes in which atmospheric or dissolved nitrogen is converted into nitrate ions.
Explain the nitrogen cycle briefly.
A cycle of matter in which nitrogen atoms move from nitrogen gas in the atmosphere, to inorganic forms in the soil, to organic forms in living things, and then back to inorganic forms in the soil and nitrogen gas in the atmosphere.
What is denitrification?
The process in which nitrates are converted to nitrites and then to nitrogen gas.
