-Depicts monastart with scriptorium and tower which call monks to pray every dat. Scriptorium is where texts were copied, learning kept alive here after the fall of the Roman Empire. The tower is of a monastery at San Salvadore. Person who writes commentary is usually highly educated scholar. Images are based on commentary. -Colophon (page at the end of a book with information about its production) -Islamic style with christian subject matter. Brightly glazed tiles in geometric patterns and horseshoe arched openings are a common feature of islamic architecture. |

-shape of byzantine cross inset with many jewels, cameos, glass. Made of silver with gold sheeting. Mixes eastern ad western pieces (barbaric and roman art). Has real roman cameos inlaid in it (carved stone to reveal an image) and fake barbarian made cameos as well. -byzantine cross form has eqaual arms widening at the ends joined by a central disc with a relief figure of christ enthroned in a jeweled mandorla. - |

-sutton hoo=burial site of scandinavian king Clausinae-metal work which creates compartments when glass or precious gems can be inlaid. Abstract geometric patterns in parts (with interlaced design) would have had ivory or bone backing, and set upon a leather purse. -Central plaque of four animals with long interlacind legs and jaws. Large hawksa attack ducks,a nd men are spread eagled between two rampant beasts. -Bright read and gold colors reflect eastern eurpoean tradition. |

The scandinavians ruled the seas in the north atlantic for about 800 years. Peack of the prow is in a serpentine shape. |

-"the lord is my shepard, i shall not want" -king david sits in front of a dtable laden with food: heholds a cup. He is portrayed as a shepherd in a pasture filled with sheep, goats, and cattle -"though preparest a table before me win the presence of mine enemies" the enemies gahter at the lower right and showt arros, but the spalmist and angel ignore them and focus on the table and the hosue of the lord. -illustration conveys the characteristically slose association ebtween text and illustration in corolingian art. |
