Define Superior
Appear above along the long axis of the body.
Ex. the head is superior to the feet
Define Inferior
Appear below along the long axis of the body
Ex. The inguinal region is inferior to the pelvic region
Define Anterior
Those structures that are most forward on the human body.
Ex. the nasal region is anterior to the occipital region
Define Posterior
Those towards the backside of the body
Ex. the dorsum region is posterior to the thoracic region
Define medial
Towards the midline of the body.
Ex. the nasal region is medial to the buccal regions
Define Lateral
Away from the midline or median plane
Ex. the ear is lateral to the nasal region
Define Cephalad(cranial)
Toward the head.
Ex. The cervical region is cephalad to the sternal region
Define caudal
Toward the tail
Ex. The pedal region is caudal to the gluteal region
Define Dorsal
Backside
Ex. the spine is dorsal to the heart.
Define ventral
Belly side
Ex. the pubic region is ventral to the gluteal region
Define Superficial (external)
Toward or at the body surface
Ex. the skin is superficial to the bones
Define deep (internal)
Away from the body surface
Ex. The lungs are deep to the ribs
