Incipient caries- occurs first, the enamel begins to demineralize

cavitation (overt lesion or frank lesion)- development of a hole

Rampant caries
What are root caries?
When caries develop on the root of the tooth, cementum is thinner than enamel. they affect the elderly
What are the 2 bacterias of the mouth?
Lactobacilli and mutans streptococci

lactobacilli- bacteria that produces lactic acid from carbs
mutans streptococci- bacteria resonsible for caries
What is the importance of saliva?
Physical protection- water content of saliva
chemical protection- contains calcium, phosphate, and fluoride
antibacterial protection- works against bacteria
How do you prevent cavities from happening?
Diet- limit starchy/ sugary foods
use fluoride/ proper oral hygiene
keep saliva throughout mouth by chewing gum and drinking water
