Constitutional Amendments and Landmark Supreme Court Cases

Congress can make no law involving religion, freedom of speech, press, or the right of people peaceably to assemble. Can only be used with the regard of all other people.

Freedom of Religion: Protection of religious thought and practice and a command of separation of church and state.

Freedom of Press: allows the right to speak ,publish, and express their views.

Right of Assembly: the right to join with others in public meetings to discuss public affairs and influence public policy.

Bearing Arms: the right of the people to keep and bear arms.

Quartering of Troops: no soldier should be quartere in any house at time of peace/war. without the consent of the owner.

Searches and Seizures:the right of the people to be secure in their , houses , papers, and effects against unreasonable searches and seizures.

Criminal Proceedings; a person can be tried for a serious federal crime only if they have been told by a grand jury. No double jeoperdy, proteted against self incrimination

Due Process; prohibit unfair, arbitrary actions by the fedearal government. Be deprived of life, liverty, or property.

Eminent Domain; Government may take private property for a legitimate public purpose. It must pay a fair price for the property seized

Criminal proceedings: a person has the right to be tried in court without a delay and by an impartial jury. The defendant must know what they are being tried for . right to cross-examine hostile witnesses and right to require the testimony of a witness. right to a attorney.

Civil Trials: the right to trial by jury is guaranteed if the amount of money involvedin that case exceeds $20 may be waived in a bench trial is agreed

Punishment for Crimes: excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed
