What principle is the understanding that words are composed of letters and that there is a relationship between printed letters and spoken sounds?
The alphabetic principle, which as children develop they come to realize that phonemes can be represented by letters.
What is graphophomemic knowledge?
Graphophonemic knowledge is the understanding of the relationship between a grapheme and a phoneme - its letter/sound correspondence (the phoneme c in camp is the grapheme /k/ in camp
What is encoding?
Encoding is the process of going from sound to print. Encoding relates to spelling.

The first step in spelling development is the association of phonemes (sounds) with graphemes (letters and letter combinations)
What is decoding?
Decoding is the process of using letter/sound correspondences to recognize words. Decoding relates to reading.
What is a pseudoword?
A pseudoword is "word" in which letters make their most common sounds, but the word has no commonly recognized meaning.
What will help a child remember specific letters of the alphabet?
Children's familiarity with an object related to a particular letter of the alphabet helps them remember that letter.
How can teachers use pseudowords (nonsense words) to assess children?
The teacher uses nonsense words to assess whether students are able to apply their ability to use sound/symbol relationships to decode a group of letters that follow a regular phonetic patterns but do not spell the acutal word.
Invented spelling indicates the childs understanding of what?
Invented spelling indicates that the child has a beginning understanding of sound/letter relationships.
