Non Democratic Governments: List a few.
Personal dictatorships, monarchies, military regimes, one-party regimes, theocracies, and illiberal regimes.
Personal dictatorship
Is based in the power of a single strong leader who usually realies on charasmatic or traditional authority to maintain power.
Military Regimes
The institution of military dominates politics.
One Party Regime
Is dominated by a strong political party that relies upon a broad membership as a source of political control.
Theocracy
A rare form of government though the one that characterizes present day Iran, a leader claims to rule on behalf of God.
Illiberal Regime
Retains the basic structures of a democracy but does not protect civil liberties
Communist Regimes
One party regimes in which a communist party controls most of a countrys political and economic system. Some have been described as totalitarian.
Totalitarian
Feature a strong official ideology that seeks to transform aspects of the state, society, and the economy, using organizations and/ or force.
Monarchy
Relies on traditional legitimacy
Co-optation
Members of the public are given beneficial relationship w/ the state/government. i.e. corporatism, clientelism, rent seeking and/ or personality cult
Corporatism
Citizen participation is channeled into state-sanctioned groups
Clientism
The state provides benefits to groups of its political supporters
Rent Seeking
Government allows its supporters to occupy positions of power in order to monopolize state benefits
Personality cults
The most often employed mechanism of control in totalitarian regimes. The state sponsored exaltation of a leader. I.E. Stalin or Ayatollah Komeini
Party System
The nature of elections and other forms of competition amoung political parties.
