And lastly, many people believe that Commedia Dell’arte came from the Renaissance era. However, Greek comedy, Roman comedy and even Medieval theatre could have been factors within this type of theatre. |
Commedia Dell’arte blossomed sometime during the 14th to the 18th century.
But It reached the height of its popularity in the 16th and 17th century. This form of theatre was extremely popular all until 1780. This form of theatre also began in Italy, and troupes traveled all throughout Europe to perform it. This theatre then influenced many other theatres globally. Theatres in Spain, Holland, Germany, Austria, England and especially, France. During the 16th century, plays were classic, stylish and rigorous. Commedia Dell’arte was the exact opposite: It's colourful, loud and excitement. This representation of this “new theatre” became popular and flourished all around Italy. The rules of theatre were overthrown. |
Commedia Dell’arte was a type of humorous theatrical presentation, and so performances took place on temporary stages, mainly city streets.
However, troupes would occasionally perform on court venues. Actors that were more famous performed in palaces and traveled abroad to different countries. There were no intricate sets in Commedia Dell’arte, and the staging was minimal. it was rarely anything more than a market or street scene. Stages were most commonly just temporary outdoor structures, made from barrels or large pieces of wood. In this theatre props were a very important thing and were greatly used. Props included things like animals, food, furniture, watering devices and weapons. |
Costumes represented the characters excellently.
Loose fitting garments were altered with tight fitting garments to create those unique details. Colours were contrasting and masks were used for more of the major characters, such as the stock characters and many others, to represent themselves. The characters of fun or satire, wore coloured leather masks. But sometimes actors would just wear what they owned to relate to the audience better. Patchwork costumes and masks were usually only worn by major characters because they were more difficult to make. There were certain colours which reflected their characters emotional states and audience could identify which social class the characters belonged to. Regardless of where they toured, the characters in Commedia Dell’arte were recognized by their costumes. Masks: were worn by all fixed characters. |
Commedia Dell’arte was not known for any religious connections.
The subjects performed did not retrace to any religious theme. The subjects performed usually involved: jealousy, love and lust. Vulgarity and masks were used in this type of theatre. Those that were religious probably did not like this type of theatre. |
During these acts, there were at least ten actors on stage.
There were no published playwrights for this particular type of theatre because it is supposed to be improvisation. It took great skill to follow along in the performance because of the improvisation element. Even though there were no noted published playwrights, actors within Commedia Dell’arte did write scenarios and scenes for comedies and tragedies. There were specific characters within Commedia Dell’arte, there was also a character called “lazzi”. This character had no relevance other than comic relief. Plots = All Commedia plots were simple; two young lovers (the innamorati) were kept apart by the old men (il vecchi) who were either fathers, guardians or elderly suitors. The servants (zanni) helped to outwit the old men and bring the lovers together. |

Commedia Dell’arte has influenced the style of improvisation.
Music and costumes within this theatre style influenced painters like Antoine Watteau and Picasso. This style of theatre is still performed today. There are still companies that perform like the Dell’Arte Company. The expressive theatre influenced Moliere’s comedy and ballets. It inspired new and fresh ranges of expression and choreographic means. |
I enjoyed learning about commedia dell'arte because it helped me understand how people all around the world treat theatre.
One of my favourite things from researching about this is that it is mostly based on the improvisation and the way they exaggerate their movement and emotions. I love that they combined these two together because when you are able to improvise its more effective to exaggerate your emotions because then the actors are concentrated on projecting their emotions to the audience. It impacted me a lot as when I perfromed a script i understood how powerful it actually is to emphasise your emotions. I felt that this was very effective on me as it made me understand how to express my characters emotions. |
