To be free of foreign rule. Were greatly influenced by the communist ideology and their struggle against the colonial rulers
Who was Ho Chi Minh?
A guerrilla leader in Vietnam who faced against the French as they tried to reclaim Vietnam as a colony. This battle was known as the First Indochina War.
What was the battle of Dienbienphu?
A bloody battle in which Vietnam guerrillas had an unexpected victory against the French and was the main battle which chased the French from Vietnam.
What happened to Vietnam after it was free of the French colonial control?
It was split into two sides (North and South) because of conflicting ideas.
What happened at the elections to reunite the two sides of Vietnam?
They never took place because the Southern Vietnam leaders feared that the communist side would win.

First they only sent food and supplies but they eventually sent troops to aid in the struggle.
What happened to the U.S. Navy Destroyer Maddox and what did this lead to?
The destroyer was attacked by the North Vietnamese and President Johnson reported this to Congress (leaving out the raids the South Vietnamese made on the North). Believing the attacks had come unprovoked, Congress passed the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution which authorized the President to take all necessary actions to prevent further aggression in Southeast Asia.
