EDEMA
What is it? How do you recognize it? Considerations Embalming? Fluid selection considerations? Injection/drainage considerations? Also consider? |
What it is - a condition characterized by an excess of
watery fluid collecting in the cavities and tissues of the body How to recognize it - the body will appear swollen and watery, could be localized to the extremities or certain body cavities THINGS TO CONSIDER Embalming - due to the additional watery fluid collected in the body, arterial fluids will be diluted upon injection Fluid selection - consider increasing HCHO content to counter dilution concerns Injection/drainage - multipoint injection recommended carotid + both femoral arteries depending upon where edema is noted, hypotrochar areas where fluid distribution is questionable, and to help dehydrate certain areas consider allowing edema to drain after embalming, then reaspirate cavities where fluid has drained Also - beware of skinslip as tissues will be delicate, watch for wrinkling as fluids drain out of the body, do not overincrease HCHO levels as it may cause dehydration |
CELLULITIS
What is it? How do you recognize it? Considerations Embalming? Fluid selection considerations? Injection/drainage considerations? Also consider? |
What it is - dry gangrene; obstruction of arterial blood
supply that may be caused by infection with strepto- cocci, staphylococci, or other organisms. Limited bacterial activity due to dryness of tissues How to recognize it - tissues dry out creating a line of demarcation. Skin looks like scales on a snake. THINGS TO CONSIDER Embalming - hypotrochar the area to ensure good distribution Fluid selection - n/a Injection/drainage - poor distribution due to damaged capillary beds Also - subject likely to have other circulatory problems, problems, watch for arteriosclerosis, heart disease |
OBESITY
What is it? How do you recognize it? Considerations Embalming? Fluid selection considerations? Injection/drainage considerations? Also consider? |
What it is - excessive accumulation of fat in the body;
increase in weight beyond that considered desirable with regard to age, height, and bone structure How to recognize it - BMI (body mass index) test, pinch test, depth of adipose tissue at incision site(s) THINGS TO CONSIDER Embalming - possible need of help with moving subject Fluid selection - n/a Injection/drainage - n/a Also - n/a |
ARTERIOSCLEROSIS
What is it? How do you recognize it? Considerations Embalming? Fluid selection considerations? Injection/drainage considerations? Also consider? |
What it is - hardening of the arteries reducing lumen
size How to recognize it - lumen of the artery will feel gritty, cannula may be difficult or impossible to insert THINGS TO CONSIDER Embalming - several attempts may be needed for cannula insertion Fluid selection - **suggest pre-injection, adding humectant??** Injection/drainage - watch closely for distribution as blockages are likely, may need to consider multipoint injection, watch for distention and fluid build-up Also - subject may also present with cellulitis, heart disease, arteriosclerosis, or other circulatory problems |
