Cloud Swing
|
ACT--Variation on the trapeze. Rope suspended from
both ends, that may have loops attached to it for wrist or ankle holds. The performer
can lie, sit or stand on it, twist around it, hang from it, spin in it, or
tangle himself up with it.

Hippodrome Track
|
Track around the tent or arena.

Cold Date
|
performances with no local sponsor. They operate on
their own, using their own staff for revenue contracts and publicity. Cold
dates are played when either a sponsor isn’t available or circuses like the
Ringling Bros, just prefer to operate on their own. They don’t have to split
the revenue with a sponsor so they make more money
|
Ballyhooing
|
the process of making the town aware that the circus is
coming and that they DON’T want to miss it. Involves flamboyant language and
exaggeration. Two masters: Barnum and Charles Ringling. Means that anything
goes when advertising; hot air balloons, billing, radio, newspapers.

Tack-Spitters
|
they were part of the crew that went into the towns several
weeks before the circus came to hang up posters. They would use tacks and would
carry them in their mouths and spit them onto their magnetic hammers then
driving them in. If they swallowed one they would eat a loaf of bread to
protect the stomach from it.

Baggage Stock

Large horses used to pull heavy circus wagons, not used in
performances.

Bale Ring Top
|
Large steel rings circling a main tent pole, to which the
canvas is latched.

Uprising of the Freaks.

a protest by the Barnum and Bailey side show
performers in London in 1898 who were angry about the use of the term freak.
They got their banners changed to prodigies as a result.

Fly-Away
|
ACT--Usually used as a finale to a trapeze act when the performer
lets go of their device at the top of a swing and sails down toward the ground,
but right before they hit, a safety or “Shock” cord stops them. Usually
connected to their ankle or wrist.
