Front Back
What does the quantum number "n" stand for?
The energy level (rings) within an atom or the distance from the nucleus
What does the quantum number "l" stand for?
The sub-level in an energy level or the path of the electron/shape of the electron cloud and orbital
What is the S-orbital shaped like? and What does L equal
A sphere and L=0
What is the P-orbital shaped like? and What does L equal?
A dumbell and L=1
What is the D-orbital shaped like? and What does L equal?
A clover (4 leaf) and L=2
What is the F-orbital shaped like? and What does L equal?
A jack and L=3
What is a 3-D region around the nucleus of an atom where an electron may be located?
An orbital
What is a noble gas? Where are they located?
A noble gas is nonreactive and are located in the last column on the periodic table.
What is the dual nature behavior within an electron?
An electron can behave as a particle or a wave. We can only observe 1 at a time. (Jekyl & Hyde)
What are the four quantum number's for Cobalt?
L=2 (d-block); M= +1; S= -1/2; N=4
What is Hund's Rule?
Orbitals of equal energy much hold a single electron in each position/orientation and have the same spin, before they can double up
What is the Aufbau Principle?
Electrons will seek the lowest energy orbital with available space and fill the orbital's in order from the lowest to highest energy.
What is the Pauli Exclusion Principle?
If electrons are paired in a orbital they much have opposite spins
How go energy levels and sub-levels relate?
They exist at the same time and overlap each other.
What is the uncertainty Principle?
The principle states that electrons can only be observed indirectly because it is impossible to know exactly where they are located at any one point in time. This was found out by Heisenberg and his experiment using photons of light.
