Reasons for settlement in New England
Religious freedom: Puritans came because they wanted the Church to be more "pure". This group was intolerant of dissenters and believed in a strong connection between Church and State.
Reasons for settlement in the Middle Colonies
Religious freedom: founded by William Penn (a dissenter who was sent from Massachusetts) for Quakers (tolerant of most religions)
Reason for settlement in The South
Mostly Economic: cash crops were grown for export. These included indigo, tobacco, and rice.
Characteristics of New England (Economic)
Poor soil, fast rivers, short growing season, natural harbors= shipbuilding, fishing, and lumbering. Also subsistence farming. Eventually started manufacturing. They prospered because of the Puritan values of hard work.
Economic characteristics of the Middle Colonies
Ship-building, small scale farming, and trading. New York and Philadelphia grew as sea ports and commercial centers. There was a middle class of professionals, artisans, and farmers.
Economic characteristics of The South
"Land=Money" Plantation-based economy. Indentured servants were used to populate colonies and as cheap labor. Slavery: the forceful importation of Africans. (At first, some were offered indentured servant opportunities.)
Northern social characteristics
Social standing based on position in the Church. Were intolerant of those with different beliefs. Ex: Salem Witch Trials
Mid Atlantic characteristics
Multiple relgious groups such as Quakers in Pennsylvania. Believed in religious tolerance. More flexible social structure than the North and developed a middle class.

Southern social characteristics
Family status was based on land. Three groups: Cavaliers/Noblemen (wealthy plantation owners), indentured servants (debtors), and Slaves. Large landowners stay close to England for exporting--> Remained members of the Church of England.
Political characteristics of the North
Hierarchy (relationship of Church and State), town meetings-- direct democracy. Mayflower Compact (first written Constitution)-- majority rule
