Front Back
A single subject research design is a method for...
Evaluating individual progress over time.
What are the basic elements of all single subject design research?
1. Selecting the target outcome
2. Selecting the intervention
3. Selecting the measurement tool.
4. Collecting intervention data.
5. Conducting the analysis (compiling the results.)
What are the four types of single subject research design?
1. AB (one baseline and one intervention)
2. ABA (which adds an additional baseline)
3. ABAB (which repeats the baseline and intervention).
4. ABC (which introduces a new intervention.)
What is an intervention?
A technique used to facilitate a change in research.
What type of measure is used to collect data in a single subject research design?
Standardized measures because they are convenient and have established reliability and validity.
What is a baseline?
It is used as a reference point to which any targeted change in the individual following intervention as compared. Also known as a starting point.
What are the two ways to report the results of single subject design?
1. Graphing the results and examining the graph to see if a change has occurred over time. Eyeballing the results.
Which single subject design is the most common and least complicated?
AB- this is because it has one baseline measure and one intervention.
Why would you use ABA design?
To be more certain that it was the intervention that was responsible for the change (and not due to some outside influence)
In ABA design what does the second A represent?
A withdrawal of the intervention and returned to the baseline.
This means to continue to measure the participant after the completion of the intervention.
*An example is a student acting out were the behaviors are charted, then seeing if the behaviors continue after the intervention ceases.
Why is the ABC design used?
To target outcomes that require more than one intervention.
*This design works the same as AB except that it utilizes multi-interventions.
*These interventions are introduced in sequence.
