A persons sense of self that is both descriptive and evaluative. It is a congitive construct. Answers who am I?. It grows and changes throughout childhood and includes others opinions and evaluations
Self concept
A cluster of characteristics used to describe self. this changes around 5-7 years reflecting self concept development. At this age, it is mostly positive, concrete, and about physical characteristics or possessions

Stage 1: Single Representation
Stage 2: Representational Mapping
Stage 3: Representational systems
Age 4, Child describes themselves in one dimension. Their descriptions are isolated without logical connections and they cannot consider multiple aspects of self. They only consider one at a time. Consider one aspect of themselves at a time
Stage 1: Single Representation

Real self
Person/self one would like to be
Ideal self
5-7 years. Child starts to make a connection between their abilites, likes and dislikes. They also start to like their abilities to their future "I like to build, so I want to be an engineer" Very positive description, dont include areas where they dont excel
Stage 2: Representational Mapping
Middle childhood, child begins to integrate specific features of themselves and their capabilities into their self concept. Begin to see multidimensional aspects of themselves.
Representational systems
How a person feels about themselves. The evaluative part of self concept that expresses their overall worth. Tied to judgements. Parents are very positive toward children, thus the child self esteem reflects attitude. All or none

Self esteem at age __ is a strong predictor of their self _________ at age 8

Changes are unable to articulate self esteem until age 8, but their actions and behaviors indicate they have an overall assessment of their level of esteem earlier in life
