Job attitudes
- a relatively stable view or opinoon of a specific person, group, organization, job or situation
Job affect
- refers to ones feelings about work
- generalized overall feeling stat
- affect involves both moods and emotions
Care about attitudes toward jobs and at work for two main reasons
(1) our attitudes strongly influence out behaviours
- if you like your job, you 'll be more likely to stay in your job
- if you feel your organization treats you unfairly, you may be more likely to leave your job or engage in counterproductive work behaviours

(2) these attitudes are important for their own sake

Warr (1987) argued that it is important to study job satisfaction not only becuase it may influence turnover and absences but
- becuase having happy workers is important in and of itself

Job satisfaction studied in the work domain?
Most studied constructs in teh work domain
Kemery, Bedeian and Rawson Zacur (1996) noted that JOB AFFECT is
- only the feeling component of job satisfaction, and that satisfaction may also involve cognitions (thoughts and attitudes) about the job
- job satisfaction is only one smalll aspect of job affect, we need to study the "feeling component" of work more braodly
Locke (1976) defined job satisfaction as a
- "pleasurable or positive emotional state resulting from appraisal of one's job or job experiences
Job satisfaction
- the textent to which people enjoy their job; may include all aspects surrounding their work (pay, supervisor, coworkers)
Three aspects of job satisfaction
(1) COGNITION involves your thoughts and beliefs about your job (I have a good job)

(2) AFFECT involves your feelings about your job (i like my job)

(3) BEHAVIOURS involve how you behave at wokr (I will go above and beyond what is expected of me in my job)
Issue around the measurement of job satisfaction involves whether it is better to measure global work satisfaction or
- to measure the specific "FACETS" or components of satisfaction
- taking everything about your job into consideration, how satisfied are you with your job?

conversely: How satisfied are you with your pay; your supervisor; your coworkers; the type of work you do
Other measures create separate scores for each aspect of the job
- satisfaction with your pay and benefits, satisfaction with teh type of work you are doing
Better to use measures that look at various facets of the job to obtain what?
- more detailed information on job satisfaction
- different factors may have different relationships with outcomes
- need to be studied individually
Global and facet scales are used global satisfaction is not
- simply the sum of facet scales
General scales tend to be more highly correlated
- with the "work" subscales than any of the facet scales
