What is learning?
A relatively permanent change in behavior that occurs through experience
What is behaviorism?
Theory of learning that focuses solely on observable behaviors, discounting the importance of such mental activity as thinking, wishing, and hoping
What is associative learning?
Learning where a connection or association is made between two events
What is conditioning?
Process of learning associations
Name two types of conditioning
Classical conditioning and Operant Conditioning
Describe Operant condtioning
Organisms learn the asociation between a behavior and consequence
Describe classical conditioning
Oragnisms learning the association between two stimuli
What is observational learning?
Learning that occurs when a person observes and imitates another's behavior; also called imitatinon or modeling
What is classical conditioning?
Learning by which a neutral stimulus becomes assoicated with a meaning ful stimulus and acquires the capacity to elicit a similar response neutral stimulus + meaningful stimulus
What is UCS?
Unconditioned stimulus Stimulus that produces a response without prior learning (ex. food)
What is UCR?
Unconditioned Response Unlearned response that is automatically elicited by an unconditioned stimulus (ex. salivation)
What is CS?
Conditioned Stimulus A previously neutral stimulus that eventually elicits the conditioned response after being associated with the unconditioned stimulus (ex. tone that elicits conditioned repsonse)
What is CR?
The learned response to the conditioned stimulus that occurs after the pairing
In classical conditioning, describe acquisition
Initial learning of the stimulus-response link, which involves a neutral stimulus being associated with an unconditioned stimulus and becoming conditioned stimulus that elicits the conditioned response
In classical conditioning, describe generalization
The tendency of a new stimulus that is similar to the original conditioned stimulus to elicit a responmse that is similar to the conditioned response
